Warning Signs Your Septic System Needs Attention

The Symptoms and What They Mean

Sewage backup into fixtures is the most urgent sign. If wastewater is coming back up through drains, toilets, or floor drains, stop using water immediately and call a licensed provider. This is a health hazard.

Slow drains in multiple fixtures simultaneously suggests a systemic issue. When one sink drains slowly, that’s usually a local plumbing problem. When every fixture is slow at the same time, the system itself is struggling — most commonly because the tank needs pumping or the drainfield is saturated.

Sewage odor near the tank or drainfield means gases are escaping. In Georgia’s Piedmont region, odor near the drainfield during wet seasons is a particularly important signal — by the time you smell it at the surface, the field may already be significantly compromised.

Standing water or soggy patches over the drainfield indicates the soil can no longer absorb the effluent. In Piedmont clay, this symptom appears sooner than in sandy soils because clay saturates more quickly. If soggy areas persist more than a day or two after rain, the drainfield — not just the weather — is likely the issue.

Gurgling sounds in the plumbing indicate air in the lines, often caused by a blockage or a full tank restricting flow.

Unusually green or lush grass over the drainfield means nutrient-rich effluent is reaching the root zone — your lawn is being fertilized by inadequately treated wastewater.

ATU alarm sounding — if you have an aerobic system, the alarm signals a malfunction. Do not ignore or disconnect it. ATU performance degrades after approximately 48–72 hours without aeration. Call your manufacturer-authorized service provider.
