Georgia septic system installation costs vary more dramatically by location than almost any other state, because Georgia’s three geological provinces produce fundamentally different site conditions. Why Piedmont Red Clay Costs More

The Piedmont’s signature red clay — the Cecil series that defines metro Atlanta — drains at 60 to 120 minutes per inch, far below what conventional gravity systems need for proper effluent treatment. In parts of Cobb, DeKalb, and Gwinnett counties, where lots are small and soils tight, engineered designs are now the norm rather than the exception.

What this means for cost: many Piedmont properties can’t support a standard gravity system at all. The county environmental health office’s site evaluation determines whether you need an ATU (aerobic treatment unit), a mound system, or a low-pressure pipe (LPP) distribution system — all of which cost significantly more than conventional gravity.

Coastal Plain: Where Costs Are Lowest

South Georgia’s sandy soils generally support conventional gravity systems, keeping costs at the lower end of the statewide range. However, properties near the coast (Chatham, Bryan, Liberty counties) with high water tables may need elevated or mound-style systems, which the EPA notes cost more than a conventional installation.

Blue Ridge Mountains: The Most Expensive Installations

North Georgia’s mountain terrain presents the most challenging conditions in the state. Thin soils over bedrock severely limit drainfield options. Steep slopes frequently require LPP or mound systems with specialized engineering. Fewer contractors serve these remote areas, which affects both pricing and timelines.

What Determines Your Specific Cost

Soil (percolation rate) is the dominant factor. A Level 3 soil report by a Georgia Certified Soil Classifier is required before a new-construction septic permit can be issued. This replaced the old “perc test” and determines what type of system the county will permit on your property.

Tank size is set by Georgia law: minimum 1,000 gallons for residential systems, sized upward based on bedroom count.

A pump chamber is needed if gravity alone will not move effluent to the drainfield. It adds to the build, but the amount depends on the pump and the lift required, and no Georgia source publishes a typical figure.

County permits among the Georgia counties that publish a schedule run from $275 in Gwinnett, Newton and Paulding to about $550 in Walton, once any separately billed site or lot review is included.
